Leading the Vibe: Tems Ignites a New Era for Women in African Music

Tems is turning her GRAMMY® wins into something much bigger than awards—she’s building a movement. On August 8–9, the Nigerian superstar and two-time GRAMMY® winner wrapped the very first in-person edition of The Leading Vibe Initiative (LVI) in Lagos, setting a high bar for what creative empowerment can look like.

In partnership with Hennessy and Native Instruments, the two-day experience brought together 20 young women in music from across Nigeria—producers, singers, and songwriters alike—for an immersive blend of hands-on workshops, mentorship, and creative collaboration. Held at the vibrant Amah Studios and GAIA Lagos, the program laid the foundation for LVI’s bold vision: a pan-African network where women in music lead, create, and thrive.

The journey kicked off with an intimate welcome dinner hosted by Tems herself. In a heartfelt speech, she reflected on her early struggles learning production and navigating the industry solo.

“There are so many women with the same drive and potential, but without the right tools or access. That’s why I started this,” said Tems. “Seeing this group come together reminded me why this matters.”

Sound, Strategy & Sisterhood

Day two brought a full-on masterclass in music industry excellence. Panels like “The Power Behind the Vision” dove into branding and career-building, led by industry heavyweights including Lola Ige (Sony Music West Africa), Dunsin Wright, and Muyiwa Awoniyi.

Workshops ran deep across performance, songwriting, and production, with hands-on guidance from top talents like Saszy Afroshii, Yimeeka, and RCA Records’ Sarah Lorentzen. Native Instruments even rolled out a custom software demo—made just for this program—to help break down tech barriers for women.

The day wrapped with a powerful panel, “If I Could Tell Her,” featuring Bloody Civilian, Sasha P, and more, followed by a closing fireside chat with Tems and Programme Coordinator Tsehaitu Retta. The celebration capped off with a Hennessy-hosted reception—equal parts victory lap and toast to the future.

As the Lagos edition closes, the momentum doesn’t stop. The Leading Vibe Initiative heads to Kenya next, with applications now open at leadingvibe.com. One city down, a continent to go.
