We’re getting ready for one of the most jaw-dropping scandals South Africa has ever seen.
Netflix is pulling back the curtain on Beauty and the Bester, a limited documentary series set to premier on September 12. This three-part true crime saga unpacks the unbelievable story of Dr Nandipha Magudumana, a glamorous celebrity doctor with a spotless image (well that’s what everyone thought) whose secret double life with convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester shocked the nation and the world till today.
Once praised as the face of success, Magudumana’s fall from grace reads like a Hollywood thriller from forged identities, luxury hideouts, staged events to a daring prison break. And it all started to unravel with one viral photo of the duo casually shopping at Sandton City, which blew up a nationwide scandal that ended in a dramatic international manhunt and a pair of handcuffs in Tanzania.
The documentary will be featuring Mzansi stars who crossed paths with either Magudumana or Bester, including actress Pearl Thusi, The Mommy Club reality star Happy Simelane, and broadcaster Penny Lebyane.
Lebyane who is one of SA’s most recognisable media voices was among several unsuspecting celebrities who visited Magudumana’s Sandton-based beauty clinic, Optimum Medical Aesthetics Solutions, seemingly unaware of the doctor’s secret criminal connections. Lebyane also previously appeared on Showmax’s Tracking Thabo Bester, where she reflected on the chilling experience.
Model and TV star Thusi had a shocking encounter with Bester back in June 2011, narrowly escaping what could have been a terrifying trap set by the so-called “Facebook Rapist.” Meanwhile, Simelane shared her own harrowing story claiming she was nearly trafficked by Bester after meeting him. In an episode of The Mommy Club, she even played back footage of the meeting, where Bester eerily asked her to “find people producing luxury content.”
Beauty and the Bester digs deep into the deception, love, and corruption that turned a picture-perfect influencer into a headline making fugitive. It will feature never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and shocking revelations.
How did one of South Africa’s most admired women become the mastermind behind one of its most outrageous criminal sagas? Our guess is that the truth is stranger than fiction as we wait for Netflix to drop the documentary.
