SAMA 31 Kicks Off with Virtual Nominee Reveal Event

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) is officially launching the journey to the 31st edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) with a virtual nominee announcement on August 28. This marks the first major milestone leading up to South Africa’s most prestigious celebration of musical excellence.

RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi underscored the importance of the awards, stating, “The SAMAs are not just about handing out trophies – they’re about legacy, impact, and the stories we tell as a nation through music. As we enter our 31st year, we remain committed to honouring the voices that shape our culture and the rhythms that move our people.”

Since their establishment in 1995, the SAMAs have become a symbol of creative excellence and national unity, recognising the best in South African music. Beyond celebrating talent, the awards also play a critical role in promoting cultural heritage, driving social cohesion, boosting the creative economy, and enhancing South Africa’s reputation as a hub for cultural tourism.

This year’s nominee announcement holds additional significance as it takes place during Women’s Month, a deliberate and meaningful choice. “Announcing SAMA 31 nominees during Women’s Month is both symbolic and strategic. It’s a celebration that aligns with a time dedicated to honouring women’s leadership, resilience, and achievements across all sectors,” Sibisi added.

By spotlighting the nominees during this month, RiSA aims to reaffirm its commitment to gender equity and inclusivity. It sends a powerful message to young girls and aspiring leaders: their voices matter, their talents are seen, and their contributions can stand alongside the very best. It’s also a moment to reflect on progress made and the work still ahead in achieving true representation and transformation.

“In this context, the virtual nominee announcement is more than just a procedural event – it’s a statement of intent. It’s about celebrating the past and present while inspiring the future,” Sibisi continued.

SAMA 31 is proudly supported by the Motsepe Foundation, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, SAMPRA, SAMRO, and CAPASSO, with SABC serving as the official media partner. These partnerships help ensure the awards continue to champion diversity, promote inclusivity across genres, and contribute to the sustainable growth of South Africa’s music industry.

Sibisi also extended gratitude to the SAMA judging panel: “We deeply appreciate the time, expertise, and thoughtful consideration our esteemed judges have given in selecting this year’s nominees. Their dedication is invaluable.”

The virtual nominee announcement will be streamed live across all SAMA social media platforms, giving fans and industry stakeholders a front-row seat to the artists, albums, and songs that shaped the past year.

The main SAMA 31 awards ceremony is set to take place in November 2025, promising a night filled with unforgettable performances, heartfelt tributes, and historic moments that will continue to define the legacy of South African music.
