Many viewers have witnessed the tension in Nkululeko Mahlangu’s marriage to Makoto Phumodi on Married at First Sight SA, especially after their first meeting at the altar. While some initially thought Makoto was just “acting,” their opinions are changing. Many now believe that her on-screen persona reflects her true character.
Over the past few weeks, viewers have seen Makoto interfere in other couples’ relationships, erupt during conversations, stir up conflicts, and even suggest that her husband is a bad person.
Nkululeko shares his experience of being on the show and the emotional journey it has taken him on.

Why did you decide to join the show?
I decided to join the show to find a wife, as I wasn’t having much luck finding someone compatible. I believed that, with professional experts and real married couples involved, I’d be paired with my soulmate.
What went through your mind when you first saw Makoto?
When I first saw my wife, I was happy, but also curious. I wanted to know if she was a humble and God-fearing woman, because those two qualities are really important to me.
How did you emotionally prepare yourself for this experiment?
I honestly didn’t have any specific expectations. I just went in knowing that the same old methods wouldn’t work here. I prepared myself through constant prayer and fasting to stay grounded and not be misled by anything I encountered during the experiment.
What have you learned about yourself through this journey?
There’s been a lot of growth for me. I’ve matured, and now I know which battles are worth fighting. I’ve also learned that silence is powerful, not every conversation needs a response.
Is there anything you wish you had done differently based on what we’ve seen so far?
Yes, there are things that have happened that I wish had gone differently, but I’m saving the details for the reunion. You’ll just have to stay tuned to see how it all plays out.
What have been some of your highs from being on the show?
There have been many highs. The moments of happiness I’ve shared with my wife have been my favourite part.
What have been some of the lows?
Watching my wife embarrass herself, thinking she’s belittling me, but in reality, she’s only ruining her own image. It hurts me to see her do that to herself.
Which couples from the show do you enjoy watching?
I really enjoy watching Nelisa and Themba. They’re my ultimate favourites, their story has been a pleasure to watch unfold. I also enjoy Portia and Bongani.
Why should people continue watching the show?
People should definitely keep watching because there’s still so much more to come, unexpected twists and turns. I hope viewers will see the truth come to light, especially things that have been hidden.
