“Sorry, I’m Not Sorry!”: Tyla Claps Back at Tiwa Savage

Tyla has continuously made it clear that she has a voice of her own. Just before this past weekend, Tiwa Savage appeared on American morning radio show The Breakfast Club to discuss her new album, but a topic outside of her line of work was brought into the conversation.

South African pop sensation Tyla has faced ongoing scrutiny when it comes to her racial identity. Her identity being denied acknowledgement mostly by segments of the Black American audience due to her ethnicity being tied to a derogatory term in the United States. However, Tyla has stood firm in who she is and has refused to engage in any back and forth surrounding her ancestry.

In a 2024 interview on the same radio show, Tyla made an appearance and there she was asked how she identifies racially, to which she gave no answer as she had addressed it before. This led to immense backlash.

Fast forward to 2025, Tiwa Savage appeared on The Breakfast Club was asked for her take on Tyla’s race and she positioned herself as “Tyla’s elder”. As an elder, she felt that she owed an apology to the Black American community on Tyla’s behalf.

South Africans took to social media expressing that Tiwa Savage handled this in a very distasteful way and only fuels more unnecessary outrage towards Tyla.

However, Tyla claimed her own voice during her own performance at the Global Citizen Festival this past Saturday. “Sorry, I’m not sorry”, a direct answer from Tyla in response to Tiwa Savage apologising for her identity on her behalf.

Tyla has clearly stated her stance on who she is and there is no one who will define it for her.
