The blacker the coffee, the richer the taste. Black Coffee proved the popular statement to be true at his birthday celebration this past weekend.
Over the weekend, South Africa’s DJ giant Black Coffee celebrated his 50th birthday in Cape Town. An event short of no luxury all the way up to the guest list. Of course, our local crème de la crème was in attendance and dressed to the nines in all-black attire, but even the world’s greatest exports decided to join in on the festivities.
Video footage could almost have had any viewer to mistake the event for the Roc Nation Brunch. The setup, the looks, the detail in every trimmed beard that was paired with a crisp suit, jewelry that looked like stones attached to powerful fists. The joy was shared amongst everyone in attendance at the gathering, but the foundation was in the legacy.

Some of the guests at the function include none other than the birthday boy’s longtime friend, American record producer and rapper Swizz Beatz. According to posts circulating on socials, he seemed to be the guest of honor based on the way guests were swarming him, dapping him up, and singing his praises. In more clips, he seemed to have a ball as an emcee of sorts, where in one video he is rapping along to Kanye West’s “So Appalled”.
More prominent guests made an appearance including Somizi, Unathi Msengana (messy, considering the complicated relationship between her and Somizi from their SA Idols days), Sizwe Dhlomo, DJ Maphorisa, Cassper Nyovest, and a guest that everyone has had their eye on over the past year: his girlfriend, Victoria Gonzalez.
In a heartfelt speech, Victoria expressed her love for Black Coffee. “Real love stories are not perfect. They stretch you; they challenge you, and believe me, this month challenged me and stretched me every single day.” She said in the speech.
She continued to say, “But the most beautiful love stories are not the easiest ones. They are the ones with growth, and the ones that fall apart and rise again, because love is not about never breaking. It’s about choosing each other again and again, and again.”
“And somehow, through everything we’ve been through, today I see a man who carries the weight of the world that asks so much from him.”
Aside from the endearing speech, DJ Maphorisa put on a set that had Somizi busting several moves. In an all-white ensemble, the media icon was on the dance floor blending in with the music:
Speaking of Somizi, remember the bracketed comment about his standing with Unathi?
Well, X users clocked this too. There have been people wondering how the two navigated being in the same space after it was revealed last year that there was a feud between them on the Idols set. Further comments also made by Unathi when she appeared on MacG’s podcast in 2024.
But this is not what this article is about.
Nonetheless, icons from all over the world joined each other to celebrate one of their own. The proof is in the pudding all over our feeds, they had a ball!
