We live in the age of distractions. An unhealthy number of distractions at that, due to the fact that we live in an era of so much access. There is no more time to actually focus on one thing.
The current state of our global ecosystem is in shambles, and it is the current ongoing war between the U.S. and Iran that we should be largely talking, but of course we’re not, because we are so distracted.
On 28 February 2026, the United States and Israel launched a large, coordinated attack on Iran targeting military sites, missile systems, and infrastructure. The main motives behind the strike were to weaken Iran’s missile and military capabilities, to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and to potentially destabalise or change the Iranian government. As a result of the initial attacks, several top Iranian leaders were killed, including Iran’s Supreme Leader.
This outcome instantly escalated tensions and triggered retaliation.
Iran retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks to places such as Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and… the UAE.
With the UAE, home to Dubai, now being roped into the war, would that not mean that influencer and BBL culture is going to face major crises?
Dubai is a city inside the (UAE) United Arab Emirates. Iran has launched missiles and drones toward the UAE as part of its retaliation against the U.S. and Israel. Iran’s strategy is to pressure the U.S. by attacking regional countries that host American military assets or cooperate with the West. Dubai being one of them.
Over the past decade, Dubai has become one of the world’s biggest hubs for influencers and online personalities. Many creators relocate there or vacation there, courtesy of their wealthy gentleman friends, because of luxury lifestyle content opportunities, high-end brand partnerships, access to luxury hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Essentially crafting the image of an aspirational lifestyle, upholding the illusion of (more often than not) what it is really funded by.
This includes the widely discussed trend of influencers travelling to Dubai or Turkey for cosmetic surgeries like BBLs or other cosmetic treatments. Should means of travel to Dubai become risky, more expensive, or restricted, then the influencer economy could face a serious decline in cosmetic and lifestyle maintenance.
Of course, the global economy would face a slower rate of movement, but the influencer ecosystem will simply relocate. The soft life aesthetic is portable, just ask the audience that subscribes to it.
And by the look of things on socials, it seems Cape Town might just be the next great hub.
