The Show Has Reached its Max

Imagine waking up on a regular morning and finding out that you will be paying your final R99 or R150 ever. It may be a great financial relief, but your daily dose of entertainment is gone for good.

The news broke this morning that Showmax is putting its services to a stop after a decade of providing premium local and international entertainment. Through an email to all users, the streamer announced that the decision was made with the purpose of strengthening their overall digital offering and ensuring long-term sustainability. At the moment, there will be no interruptions, but the streaming service is set to shut down in the near future.

Now a CANAL+ company, Multichoice has taken the decision to halt the streaming service after further review. Following the acquisition by CANAL+, there have been talks of major changes being made and this may be one of the upcoming changes. Additionally, another change that has been made is seen on SuperSport with the Olympics not being broadcasted.

In a statement released by the Showmax Board of Directors, the following has been shared:

“The substantial annual losses experienced by the Showmax business have proved unsustainable. The decision to phase out Showmax reflects our focus on building a sustainable, competitive business for the long term in an increasingly demanding global streaming environment,” the statement reads

This leaves subscribers to wonder what the fate of their favourite Showmax Originals such as “Youngins”, “Adulting”, and “Law, Love & Betrayal” will be.
