Fight for Tshwane continues as DA heads back to court

The DA says it’s going back to court to force political parties to attend Tshwane metro council meetings.

The party says it will oppose applications for leave to appeal brought by both the ANC and the EFF in the city.

Last month, the North Gauteng High Court ruled that it was unlawful to place Tshwane under administration.

The battle to power in Tshwane has been raging for six months.

About seven council meetings have collapsed since last year December, with residents of Tshwane bearing the brunt of the political squabbling.

The North Gauteng High Court not only set aside the provincial government’s decision to place the municipality under administration but also ordered all members of the ANC and EFF to attend council meetings.

But, the provincial government is not happy and has appealed to the Constitutional Court.

This means the high court ruling will be temporarily halted.

The DA refuses to accept this.

“We are going to bring a Section 83 in terms of the superior court act,” said DA mayoral candidate Randall Williams.

“It’s an application that will allow you to have the judgment granted in your favour to be implemented immediately while the processing of the appeal is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, the EFF has again refused to comment.
