Municipal debt owing to Eskom is hovering at R 28-billion. That is an increase of over R8-billion over the last year.
Deputy President David Mabuza says national and provincial government departments will have paid off their portion of the debt by the next time he answers questions in the National Assembly.
He told the house that despite high unemployment and poverty, those who can afford to pay for their services must do so.
“All we need to do now is know exactly, how much is owed by who – so that if we switch-off, we switch-off the right person, for the amount owed, even if the amount is in dispute, that person can challenge the municipality, or challenge Eskom, but we can’t just negotiate forever. At a certain point, we must insist that people pay for services,” he said.
Eskom has implemented ongoing load reduction in several parts of Gauteng.
The power utility says this is due to persistent network disruptions caused by illegal connections.
