2nd group of SA medical students return home from Cuba

Emotional moments at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday. Some of the South African medical students who were stuck in Cuba finally arrived back home.

They are the second group to return, after a delay caused by financial issues.

Celebrations echoed in the terminals of OR Tambo International on Monday morning.

They left South Africa in 2015, to study medicine in Cuba.

This year their return was delayed when the health department allegedly didn’t pay their stipend for two months. This led to some students even selling their belongings to survive.

The 14,000-kilometre flight home seemed far away indeed.

The medical students wheeled their bags and their lives back into South Africa once more.

‘I’m lost for words, I’m happy to be back home. I’m happy I made it home safe”

Medical students from the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro medical programme have finally reunited with their families after five years but their journey doesn’t end here. They have to still study for a further 18 months in SA.

The Health Department hasn’t yet responded to eNCA’s questions about the matter.
