President Cyril Ramaphosa is convening the National Coronavirus Command Council.
It comes amid growing concerns over the increase in new infections and the impact of the new variant.
On Friday, 2,828 new infections and 12 deaths were recorded in South Africa.
The test positivity rate has increased to 9.1 percent.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Joe Phaahla is slamming the UK’s red list decision.
He says the country reneged on an agreement to consult before imposing travel restrictions.
Several other countries have since followed suite.
