The popular controversial actress and social media influencer, Tonto Dike, is probably the latest celebrity to join the world of politics. She made the announcement via her social media handles, which was accompanied with photos of her and the gubernatorial candidate known as Tonte Ibraye, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) political party, for governorship position in Rivers State after Tonte picks the actress as his deputy.
Tonto is usually in the news for questionable reasons, and the online community see her as very controversial. Sometime in May 2022, she was involved in a squabble with the transgender, Bobrisky. Before the rift, both celebrities had a cordial relationship between them, and many persons have assumed that they were “paddy”, which is the pidgin term for a dear one. Bob had accused Tonto of disloyalty, and went on and on to mention how he had been a good friend, and Tonto not appreciating her enough. Tonto had allegedly put up a disturbing photo of her transgender friend without her usual makeup, as a response to her rants. The latter, who had found it rather derogatory, went ahead to put up a crying picture of his friend and captioned it “No be only you sabi post pictures” in response to Tonto’s earlier photo post, which further fuelled their online fight.
Well, this time, it’s for something good. Tonto’s announcement of her entry into politics has caused a lot of stir online, because perhaps it came as a shock to many. Several reaction has trailed the new development as many think it is too sudden and without any prior undertone of a political position pursuit. This could be likened to her perceived seemingly uncoordinated and childish disposition on the social media space and beyond. However, the actress rarely listens to critics as she usually go from one controversy to another.
One Twitter user with the handle @SirDavidBent has opined that she is undeserving of such prestigious position in politics. In his words:
“I think the ADC should be a political party featured in Nollywood. Imagine ousting out brilliant candidates like Kingsley Moghalu and Chukwuka Monye, only to let Tonto Dikeh be the running mate of a governorship candidate in Rivers? Tonto Dikeh? Bobrisky’s paddy? Must be ment.”
Everyone has their flaws and thus is not completely a saint. In addition, everyone has their bright sides, which sometimes, is not talked about enough. The combination of both properties is what makes us human isn’t it?
One thing you cannot take away from Tonto is her philanthropist nature; giving to the needy through her foundation known as The Tonto Dikeh Foundation.
In a time where Nigeria is hopefully looking forward to full inclusion of women in politics, news like this are usually a breath of fresh air, unless of course, the subject in question have certain records that may stand in their way. Obviously, in Tonto Dikeh’s case, her shortcomings were probably not severe enough to hold her back, as she emerges as the official running mate of Tonte Ibraye for Rivers State governorship position.
