English media publications report that Portugal and Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo tried to convince interim manager Ralph Rangnick about defender Harry Maguire’s display.
Ronaldo reportedly called for United captain Maguire to be dropped last season as the dressing room turned toxic and results dipped.
The Mirror has it that the return of the former Real Madrid star to Old Trafford has not gone to plan and tensions frayed last season as the club limped to a sixth-place finish.
Subsequent to their failure to reach this season’s UEFA Champions League, fresh details have emerged surrounding the Portuguese striker’s demands, from team selection to formation tweaks.
Among those players who called for Maguire’s demotion to the bench include Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba who has since joined Juventus, but Ronaldo’s message came through clearly when he said: ‘Maguire is part of the problem’.
Ironically, the former Leicester City central defender, Maguire, whom Ronaldo called to be dropped, has also been out of the team during their recent upturn in fortunes.
“The 37-year-old wanted to play alongside Edinson Cavani who has left the club, yet his demands fell on deaf ears,” reports the publication.
“The report helps shed light on the summer of discontent at Old Trafford – which has largely been overshadowed by Ronaldo pushing to leave.”
While his future has also been a subject of speculation, it seems the seasoned forward will remain at the club given the lack of interested parties who can afford his wages.
European sides such as Paris St. Germain, and Napoli are among those who were linked with Ronaldo’s signature, but all these clubs have turned down the opportunity to sign ‘CR7’.
The best performance of the Red Devils’ season so far came against Liverpool in their 2-1 win at home when Ronaldo was dropped to the bench and they backed it up by beating Southampton away from home, again with Ronaldo among the substitutes.
