“Sad News”: US Rapper and Grammy holder Coolio found dead in Los Angeles

The global showbiz community is mourning the passing of United States rapper Coolio whose death has been confirmed by his manager on Wednesday.

Coolio, Artis Leon Ivey Jr, rose to prominence with his iconic hit Gangsta’s Paradise, has died at the age of 59 and Twitter users are sharing their tributes.

According to BBC, his longtime manager Jarez Posey told US media that the celebrated artist was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of a friend’s house in Los Angeles.

Coolio started making music in the 1980s, but established himself in the hip hop scene when he recorded Gangsta’s Paradise in 1995.

While the exact cause of his death on has not yet been revealed, Posey told TMZ, which first reported the news, that paramedics believed he may have had a cardiac arrest.

In an update on the legend’s passing, TMZ said investigators confirmed there was no suspected foul play in relation to drug use.

“Law enforcement sources tell TMZ no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found at the scene of Coolio’s death. An autopsy and toxicology test will be used to determine an official cause of death,” reports the entertainment website.

“Paramedics were called to a house in Los Angeles around 4 PM for a medical emergency and when they got there they pronounced Coolio dead.”

Coolio scooped a Grammy for Gangsta’s Paradise, as the song was part of the soundtrack for the movie Dangerous Minds starring Michelle Pfeiffer.

The haunting track continues to be widely listened to and has just passed a billion streams on Spotify, according to his official website.

Over a career spanning four decades, he recorded eight studio albums and won an American Music Award and three MTV Video Music Awards.

Looking at the other songs he produced include Fantastic Voyage, Rollin’ With My Homies, 1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New), and Too Hot.

Famed rapper Snoop Dogg referenced Coolio’s world-famous track in his own tribute, writing: “Gangstas paradise. R I P.”

Among those who paid tributes to the fallen rap star is none other than Ice Cube who said he is saddened by this news.

“This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry,” fellow rapper and actor Ice Cube said.
