Senegal and Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mané clinched the Socrates Award, the very first winner of the award at the 2022 edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The award is named after the late Brazilian footballer Socrates who fought for Brazilian people against the Military government in 1980s.
The Socrates Prize, a novel award in the history of the awards, identifies the best social initiative by a committed champion.
Mané has carved a niche for himself as a champion both on and off the field. The Senegal international has been described by many as a man with a ‘golden heart’
The 30-year-old’s humanitarian work in Senegal over the years has seen many lasting impacts in the country, particularly in his native village of Bambali, where he provides monthly stipends of €70 to every family in the village.
“Thank you to everyone, I am very happy to be here, a little intimidated but I am happy to do something for my country’s people to improve their lives” Mane said, who heads up lots of humanitarian aid in Senegal.
“Socrates represents the right morals, and democracy, to achieve a better world, and football represents the world we dream of. In my country at the moment, which has a lot of people struggling to make ends meet, I know what Socrates would think”, Rai said, ex-PSG player, referring to the second round of presidential elections in Brazil.
Mane who left Liverpool last season, finished second behind Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema in the Ballon D’or, an award that goes to the best Male player of the year 2022 (August 2021 to July 2022).
