Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus vows they’ll turn the corner

Ahead of their clash against Golden Arrows on Tuesday night, Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus has pleaded with the supporters to rally behind the club.

The Soweto giants, Pirates, are away to a resurgent Golden Arrows who could be stubborn to ensure the visitors remain winless in four matches across all competitions.

Abafana Bes’thende are enjoying a fine form under manager Vusumuzi Vilakazi and will look to add more woes to coach Jose Riveiro’s Pirates in the DStv Premiership.

However, Erasmus, who scored his first goal since his return for Pirates, believes they will turn the corner and asked the fans to keep believing in the team, saying it was difficult to accept the draw against AmaZulu last Friday at Orlando Stadium.

“You know it is difficult to accept a draw with the chances we created, but you know we got to stay positive,” Erasmus said.

“We need the support from the fans to cheer us on and not to be negative, just to keep motivating us because they are the 12th man for us in the field. It’s important for them to keep motivating us, and things will change, we just need a little bit more time.”

As the Durban-based Abafana Bes’thende are fresh from a 1-all draw against Stellenbosch FC at home on Friday, Vilakazi also lamented their stalemate.

The KwaZulu-Natal side are eighth on the DStv Premiership standings – three points behind fifth-placed Pirates and three points above 14th-placed Maritzburg United.

“We’re only focusing on doing well as a team, not on what other people say,” Vilakazi said.

“What people think about us, we can’t control. People in football have their own opinions, and we can’t focus on that. We understand our responsibility as coaches. We want to make Golden Arrows a better team and try to make sure we succeed in our mission to make this club better.”

The two South African top-flight outfits will square off at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Tuesday (7.30pm) – Arrows will look the extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

Bucs as Pirates are known to their fans, occupy the fifth spot on the DStv Premiership standings, three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and a win over Arrows could elevate coach Jose Riveiro’s side into the top three spots.
