Relief as Sadio Mane’s World Cup participation ‘not in jeopardy’

Contrary to media reports that Senegal will be without striker Sadio Mane at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, his club Bayern Munich has released a statement regarding his injury.

Mane is said to be suffering from a tendon injury that will sideline him from the eagerly anticipated global showpiece, but the German club, Bayern says it’s not serious.

Mane was hit in the leg and was substituted in the first half of Bayern’s 6-1 win over Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Tuesday.

The Lions of Teranga star, as Senegal is known in football circles, Mane will now be available for the World Cup in Qatar and that is according to Bayern’s assistant coach.

Munich’s assistant coach Dino Toppmoller stated that the injury was not serious and that his participation at the World Cup is not in jeopardy.

“Sadio Mané was hit on the leg, which caused him a little nerve pain. Nothing too serious and his participation in the World Cup should be in jeopardy,” he said.

At the same time, Mane’s club manager Julian Nagelsmann revealed that he would only make comments until after the player undergoes tests.

“That’s an unpleasant spot; it radiates a bit into the muscles. I think he has to go to the X-ray to see if there is something there because it is splintering easily. But I hope that nothing is wrong. I can’t say anything for sure yet,” said Nagelsmann.

Should Mane be ruled out of the tournament in the Gulf, this could come as a massive blow to the African champions’ boss Aliou Cisse who will need his full-strength squad.

Speaking on behalf of the Senegalese Football Association, president Augustin Senghor, said they are worried about such reports on their talisman.

“Imagine if France lost Benzema. We cross our fingers, we have been worried since we received the news yesterday,” he said per AFP.

“We are waiting for the Bayern medical staff to do their diagnosis and then to be officially informed by them. We want to wait for reliable information from the club itself.”

The West Africans are in Group A together with the Netherlands, hosts Qatar and Ecuador.
