“Tjo”: Kaizer Chiefs rekindle the love with Kappa, dump Nike

Kaizer Chiefs have dumped American sports apparel manufacturer, Nike and opted to rekindle their marriage with Italian kit maker, Kappa.

The Soweto giants, Chiefs, announced the news on Thursday night but it seems the Glamour Boys fans are not pleased when judging social media reactions.

However, Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung, said the club is excited to partner with Kappa as their relationship dates back to 1989.

At the same time, Motaung also thanked their current technical sponsor, Nike, who has been with them for 23 years since the year 2000.

“We are excited to team up with Kappa once again, a brand with which Kaizer Chiefs set new records and established itself as trendsetters in African football in the early 1990s,” said Motaung.

“Kappa, like Kaizer Chiefs, is a unique brand of style, and class and one of the key players in the global football kit space.

“Kappa have had great partnerships with some of the world’s leading football clubs, as well as a number of local teams over the years.

“This deal is not only an acknowledgment of our past but also an exciting leap into the future for the club.”

As the two giants initially formed the partnership back in the late 80s, the partnership – which lasted until 1996 when Reebok took over – saw the two brands build a strong and proud heritage.

The DStv Premiership outfit announced that the new deal follows the parting of ways between Chiefs and Nike at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

“It’s important to thank Nike for the partnership since 2000. It’s uncommon for partnerships to last for over 20 years, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have enjoyed a relationship with one of the world’s leading sports brands,” concluded Motaung.

@MuzieS Ndlovu said:

“What I hate about Kappa is Italian teams have beautiful jerseys but South African teams give us dull jerseys…Abo Supersport Utd, Highlands, and of course Black Leopards with their awful jerseys. Abanalo iqiniso.”

“So you couldn’t even choose Adidas or Puma. You just went straight for Kappa tjo.”

@Andile Junior commented:

“Congratulations and at least their fans will manage to buy jerseys cos Kappa is the cheapest label in the world at least your jersey will cost R180. Just imagine ngeBlack Friday even R50 ungalithola.”
