The entertainment industry is never short of controversies.
There have been several celebrity controversies that have unfolded during the last year.
Here are the ten most notable:
Cheesecake Drama
I doubt Sonia Booth expected the backlash that would result from her decision to make her husband Matthew’s alleged infidelity public.
Sonia accidentally placed herself into the butt of public criticism by exposing him for being unfaithful, as their relationship turmoil swiftly became a public spectacle.
Sonia’s proof of her husband’s adultery included a photograph of the now-infamous Tupperware and the missing cheesecake.
That same cheesecake inspired some of the year’s funniest memes and some of the most inventive marketing promotions.
Kanye West loses his marbles
Throughout his career, Ye, the musician formerly known as Kanye West, has been dogged by controversy.
But this year has been a wild ride for the rapper, owing to his frequent use of anti-Semitic rhetoric online and in interviews, as well as his choice to wear a White Lives Matter T-shirt at his fashion show.
The next morning, Ye returned to his Instagram stories to clarify his viewpoint, writing, “Everyone knows that ‘Black Lives Matter’ was a scam. Now it’s over. You’re welcome.”
All of this uproar led to adidas cutting their losses and cancelling their very profitable Yeezy association with the rapper.
Msaki and Smash Afrika entanglement
A Sunday gossip weekly published a story last month alleging that artist Msaki and broadcaster Smash Afrika were involved.
According to the magazine, Smash’s wife’s relative, Kefiloe Chuene, disclosed facts regarding his affair.
“After seeing a picture of the 5FM host kissing popular singer Msaki, Smash Afrika’s wife, Kefiloe, has accused him of cheating on her with the artist,” it said.
Fans were shocked to learn that Msaki, who is as uncomplicated as they come, was embroiled in such a story. “Let’s call it a year,” one of them joked.
Sithelo Shozi takes on Andile Mpisane
Sithelo Shozi ignited a media frenzy earlier this year when she claimed that her former lover and baby daddy, Andile Mpisane, had physically mistreated her throughout their relationship.
Sbahle Mpisane, Andile’s older sister and a former close friend of Sithelo’s, quickly joined Musa Khawula’s Twitter Space to query why Sithelo had never registered a complaint of abuse against Andile if the claims were true.
Shauwn Mkhize, Sbahle and Andile’s mother, also issued a statement denying her abuse allegations.
Will Smith slaps Chris Rock
Will Smith unleashed his “bottled wrath” on comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards in March, after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife’s shaved head.
Smith revealed to Trevor Noah on “The Daily Show” that he wasn’t in a good emotional place at the time.
“It was a lot of things, it was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother,” he said.
“All of that just bubbled up in that moment. That’s not who I want to be.”
The actor’s road to redemption got under way last week when his latest film, the American historical action film “Emancipation”, debuted on Apple TV+.
Mihlali Ndamase’s relationship with Leeroy Sidambe
Trolls have targeted popular influencer and content creator Mihlali Ndamase when it was revealed that Leeroy Sidambe, the local businessman she’s seeing, is the estranged husband of Mary Jane Sidambe.
A few months ago, the trolls grew so numerous that Sidambe declared, “In March of this year after many months of trying to make things work, I took steps towards separation from my marriage and the marital home,” he said.
“The constant defaming of those who work in the public space has to stop. In my view, cyber-bullies are spineless and hateful people, who hide behind the keyboard to strip others of their success with untruths coated as facts.”
Depp vs Heard Trial
Amber Heard has filed an appeal against the libel trial judgement that awarded millions of dollars in damages to her ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Earlier this year, the former Hollywood power couple faced a contentious six-week trial in which the actor was granted $10.35 million in damages.
In Depp’s lawsuit, Heard defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post piece in which she represented herself as a victim of domestic abuse.
Depp maintained that even though she did not identify him by name, the message was apparent.
