Shakira defends her current song after it was labelled a “diss track” directed at her ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué

Shakira has defended her current song, which has been labelled a “diss track” aimed at her former Gerard Piqué and his girlfriend.

The 45-year-old singer claimed the “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol 53” single was for “women who rise up against those who make us feel insignificant”.

She said on Instagram about the song, which has topped Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart: “I never thought what for me was a catharsis and a release would go straight to number one in the world.

“I want to embrace the millions of women who rise up against those who make us feel insignificant.

“Women who defend what they feel and think and raise their hand when they don’t agree – they are my inspiration.”

Some social media users accused Shakira of “misogyny” for releasing a song that looked to be directed at her ex, while others argued she was channelling her “bad experiences” into artistic content, as many artists before her had done.

Shakira was previously claimed to have placed a life-size witch doll on the balcony of her Spanish house, which is said to overlook the property of her ex-mother-in-law.

According to the Spanish daily Marca, Montserrat Bernabeu observed the scary mannequin on Shakira’s balcony in Barcelona.

According to the Spanish show “Más Vale Tarde,” Montserrat allegedly requested one of Shakira’s workers to turn the witch around so it didn’t face her house, which is on the same street.

In a tweet, Spanish writer Marc Leirado Millan hinted that the conflict had been going on for some weeks: “Weeks ago, I got some information that Piqué’s mother was worried about an alleged ritual that was done to her with a black witch.

“But I didn’t give it any more importance.”

Shakira and former footballer Gerard, 35, called it quits after 11 years of marriage in May, and the singer is said to be considering a relocation to Miami with their two children, Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7.

Her new song, which has only been published in Spanish so far, has been interpreted as a “diss” and “revenge” ballad intended at her ex, who is now with his 23-year-old girlfriend Clara Chia, with whom he was said to be cheating before his break-up with Shakira – as she sings lyrics such as:

“I’m worth two 22’s. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio.”

She also appears to mock Gerard’s intelligence by singing, “A lot of gyms. But use your intellect a little bit too”.

In another passage, she sings the following lines: “You left me the mother-in-law as a neighbour. With the press at my door and a debt with the taxman.”

Last year, Shakira said she felt “violated” by Spanish tax officials charging her of a £12 million scam.

The singer and her legal team issued comments ahead of the trial, which may result in her being sentenced to eight years in prison if proven guilty.

“It is unacceptable that the tax authorities, in their accusation, do not respect the legal certainty that must be guaranteed to any taxpayer, let alone my fundamental rights,” she added.

“As well as that, they are trying to damage a reputation earned with the work of many years … in my case they have violated my right to privacy and the presumption of innocence, basic rights of any citizen.”

Shakira is accused of posing as a foreign resident and using an offshore corporation account structure to avoid paying taxes from 2012 to 2014, and she is on trial on six distinct accusations.

In December, she and Gerard reached an agreement in court over child custody.

After a 12-hour meeting with attorneys, the ex-couple signed the agreement in Barcelona, arriving and departing the court individually while being flagged by their legal teams.

They stated in a joint statement following the formalisation of the agreement that their children were their first priority: “Our sole objective is to provide them with the utmost security and protection, and we trust that their privacy will be respected.

“We appreciate the interest shown and hope that the children can continue with their lives with the necessary privacy in a safe and calm environment.”
