South African music legend Caiphus Semenya has rubbished reports that he is demanding 50% of royalties from the late rapper, Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes.
Semenya has set the record straight following a report carried by Sunday World that the Nomalanga hitmaker was looking for a payment from AKA.
Speaking on Nkululeko n Cultr podcast, Semenya suggested that the Sunday World reporter was merely pushing a certain agenda.
As posted by Entertainment SA, the legendary Jazz musician reportedly demanded royalties from AKA‘s management after the slain rapper sampled his songs on his posthumous album Mass Country.
Additionally, he stated that he shares sympathies with the family of AKA following an untimely tragedy and that he would never demand money.
“There is no song that’s worth his life. He says (SundayWorld Journalist) I knocked on AKA’s grave, I’m not like that, when someone is mourning you sympathize with them,” he said.
“And the way this boy (AKA) died is painful to me and there is no song that’s worth his life. 50%? What’s 50%? Of what? And he didn’t know what song it is, does he know which song it is?”
ESA published that the Ziphi Nkomo singer allegedly demanded 50% from two singles AKA sampled on his top-charting album.
He added that negotiations regarding his music are done by his music publishers and he has never negotiated a song.
Furthermore, the angry veteran explained that he started Semenya Music when he was 32 years old and John Levy helped him to put my publishing together.
“Since then I have never, not once negotiated a song. The publisher does that, that’s their job,” he clarified.
The celebrated and award-winning hitmaker also praised AKA as a ‘smart boy’, saying AKA fixed it (Matswale) and there is a picture that they took together when they were smiling because AKA was very smart.
ESA published that AKA is well-known for sampling a few tracks to build his numerous successes.
One of the musicians whose songs he sampled is enraged and demands payments. Semenya, a legendary jazz musician, alleges that the late rapper copied two of his tracks without his consent.
According to Sunday World, Semenya is requesting 50% royalties from these two tracks.
