CONTINUING THE FIGHT AGAINST GBV

We can state that GBV (Gender Based Violence) continues to be a bigger threat to society than before and as we continue to have campaigns like 16 Days of Activism, have you ever found yourself wondering as to what, as a society can do in order to contribute in the continuous quest to fight against gender-based violence? While campaigns against gender-based violence continue, here are a few ways we can continue the fight:

Continue creating awareness

As much as this may be a shocking fact, just know that most women across South Africa are not even aware of an abusive relationship or even have insights on how the many forms of abuse can take place, some even go as far as speaking down on victims of abuse while they themselves are victims but they are not aware. This is why it is important to spread and promote campaigns that are creating awareness about GBV.

Prioritising Women Empowerment

Empowerment is a necessary tool not only for all women but for every human being, it is just unfortunate that women are mostly the ones who go through the phase of GBV. This empowerment is necessary for all those who are at risk of abuse, those who are still going through abuse, who have survived abuse.

The reality is that many women in abusive relationships are more likely to stay in abusive relationships because they fear being left homeless and without financial support. They might also fear being judged by others, or further punished by their partners if they speak out.

The more we bring up these points when we speak about ending gender-based violence – the more we spread the idea and get others to act on it.

Making Help available everywhere

The reality is that not everyone has access to the internet, television or any form of technological devices that distributes information. Some women live in areas that are impoverished or are from low-income families that are being abused and have no clue what to do or where to go for help.
