HOW WE, AS MEN CAN CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO GENDER EQUALITY

Gender equality is an important human right, which is vital for both men and women. They should work together in trying to champion the issue of inequality. Old traditions and cultures have played a major role in promoting and advancing it. Many positions in the past were held by men simply because of the above-mentioned ideas. Let’s further explore different ways in which men can contribute to gender equality.

Recognise how cultural and religious norms have played a role

Even in the 21st century, majority of religions and customs are still reigning supreme over women, they somehow carry that primitive mentality that men are always greater than women and that women are only created to serve and obey orders given by men. In other countries, women are said to not being able to have that sense of having the luxury of their own identity, some are even put to death if they are found showing their face and hair.

Therefore, it is important to recognise this abusive behaviour and make sure that such countries that still carry such a stereotypical mentally must be challenged. Introducing equitable relationships between men and women in their private spaces and in the workplace and ultimately in society should be now considered to be a norm, especially in the times we are living in.

Actively listen to women’s perspectives

Let’s be honest, we can’t tell women, who are the experts on their own life experiences, how to live, behave or carry themselves so it is important that as men who see women as more than just sexual objects, find ways for women to have more voice and to hear women’s stories and take their concerns seriously without interrupting or trying to make them feel less of themselves. Let’s make sure that we amplify women’s voices, acknowledge their experiences, and take on the role of educating other men in a way that inspires trust and respect.

Have women in Leadership

Can you imagine what or how it would be in leadership positions if more women took charge? We all know that what women touch, turns to gold and they are twice hard workers than men are. The main reason why most men have more knowledge than women in leadership is mainly because women have always been deprived of leadership opportunities for a while in the past. This can be changed by men to show support to women in leadership.

Split Domestic Responsibilities

In modern days, we get to experience more men taking charge on domestic duties, which back then was seen as an insult to men if a male figure was to be found doing domestic duties. Household chores and domestic responsibilities should be shared, in that way, women can pursue their desired careers and get better opportunities outside their homes.

Teach and Guide Women

Mentoring and teaching women in their professional and personal lives. This involves recognising women in the workplace and supporting them in a professional setting. Create opportunities for growth and development so that women are visible.
