Duarttee Shines as Rookie of the Year at HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Awards

The Springbok Sevens playmaker Ricardo Duarttee won the annual HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series awards in London on Sunday evening. Mr Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, congratulated Duarttee on being named Rookie of the Year.

The winners of the men’s categories were announced at Twickenham, bringing the 2023 World Series to a close after 11 tournaments. These awards recognize and celebrate players and teams who have excelled throughout the season, providing thrilling and inspiring moments for fans all over the world.

Duarttee, a 25-year-old player, made his Blitzbok debut in Dubai, where South Africa won the tournament in the final stages last year. He beat out fellow nominees Theo Forner of France and Joaquin Pellandini of Argentina to win the award for the outstanding player who made his World Series debut this season. Duarttee’s rookie season statistics are impressive, having played in 52 games and scoring 15 tries, 67 conversions, and one penalty for a total of 212 points.

Mr Alexander praised Duarttee’s achievement while acknowledging the Blitzboks’ difficult season, which was marred by injuries and disruptions. Duarttee’s emergence as a new player exemplifies the team’s improved depth, as he capitalized on the opportunity and performed admirably. His passionate approach to the game and unwavering determination are in line with the Blitzboks’ values. Despite adversity, Duartee and his teammates consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment, even when results did not always meet their expectations.

Mr Alexander, who was pleased with Duarttee’s award, expressed optimism for the future of both the player and the Blitzboks. He expects more success and a concerted effort from the team to reclaim their previous accomplishments.

Other award winners from the 2023 World Series were announced in addition to Duarttee’s recognition. Samoan Vaa Apelu Maliko won the Gilbert Top Try-scorer and DHL Impact Player awards. Rodrigo Isgro of Argentina won the Try of the Series award for his outstanding performance against Samoa in Los Angeles. The Fair Play Award was given to Japan.

Rodrigo Isgro (Argentina), Leroy Carter (New Zealand), Marcos Moneta (Argentina), Akuila Rokolisoa (New Zealand), Vaa Apelu Maliko (Samoa), Luciano Gonzalez (Argentina), and Henry Paterson (Australia) comprised the HSBC Dream Team.

These honours are in recognition of the exceptional talent and dedication demonstrated by individuals and teams throughout the 2023 World Series. They capture the spirit of rugby sevens and inspire fans all over the world.
