Alpine driver Pierre Gasly can breathe a sigh of relief as he moves away from the risk of a Formula One race ban. Gasly has recently shed two of the ten penalty points he had accumulated over the past year for a series of minor offences. It is important to note that reaching a total of twelve points within a twelve-month period triggers an automatic suspension from racing.
The first two penalty points were incurred by Gasly while driving for AlphaTauri at the Spanish Grand Prix on May 22 of last year, when he collided with Lance Stroll from Aston Martin. Fortunately for Gasly, the cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola last Sunday means that he will not accumulate any more penalty points before the ones from the Spanish incident expire.
Despite shedding two points, Gasly still holds the record for the highest number of penalty points among all drivers on the starting grid. This is a result of various infractions he committed, accumulating a total of ten penalty points before the Mexican Grand Prix in October last year.
In the current Formula One season, stewards have taken a different approach to penalty points, focusing primarily on instances of unsafe driving rather than violations of sporting rules like exceeding track limits. Gasly’s ten penalty points, up until now, have been distributed as follows: four points for collisions, two for speeding under red flag conditions, two for being too far behind the safety car, and the remaining two for repeatedly exceeding track limits and gaining an advantage by going off the designated course.
Looking ahead, the Monaco Grand Prix is set to take place this weekend, providing Gasly with another opportunity to demonstrate his skills on the iconic street circuit.
In a separate announcement, Formula One revealed that it will be donating one million euros to support communities affected by flooding in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. The funds will be channelled through the region’s Agency for Territorial Safety and Civil Protection. This decision comes after the cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola circuit due to the devastating impact of the flooding.
Stefano Domenicali, the Chief Executive of Formula One and a native of Imola, expressed his concern for the affected communities and emphasized the importance of providing support during such difficult times. He conveyed gratitude towards the emergency services for their exceptional efforts. Additionally, luxury sportscar manufacturer Ferrari, for whom the Imola circuit is named after founder Enzo and his son Dino, also pledged a one million euro donation to assist in the relief efforts.
As Formula One takes measures to ensure fair competition and safety on the track, Gasly’s reduction in penalty points allows him to continue racing without the looming threat of a ban. The focus now shifts to the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix, where drivers will compete on one of the most prestigious circuits in the world.
