Elton John, the renowned pop superstar, delivered a memorable and emotionally charged performance at Britain’s iconic Glastonbury Festival, potentially marking his final show in the United Kingdom. The 76-year-old musician, currently on a global farewell tour, expressed his gratitude and disbelief at the opportunity to perform at Glastonbury, stating, “I never thought I’d ever play Glastonbury.” Recognizing the significance of the occasion, John promised to give his best and entertain the crowd, acknowledging the possibility that this could be his last show in England.
Glastonbury, a legendary music festival hosted in southwest England for the past five decades, generated tremendous anticipation among fans prior to Elton John’s appearance on the main Pyramid Stage. One such fan, Giles Briscoe, a 26-year-old PhD student, highlighted the historic moment of John’s career and the magnitude of performing on such a prominent stage.
Elton John lived up to the heightened expectations, commencing his set with a rendition of Pinball Wizard, a role he famously played in The Who’s rock opera Tommy. Throughout the concert, he delighted the audience with a selection of his greatest hits, including Candle in the Wind, Crocodile Rock, and a powerful rendition of I’m Still Standing. John dedicated the emotional performance of Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me to his late “friend” and “inspiration” George Michael, coinciding with what would have been Michael’s 60th birthday on that Sunday.
Adding to the special nature of the night, John’s husband, David Furnish, revealed that the musician’s retirement from touring did not signify the end of his music career. Furnish disclosed that Elton John would continue making music after the farewell tour, with plans to embark on a new studio album later in the year. He also hinted at the uniqueness of Sunday’s performance, describing it as “very special” and “not just another day in the office.”
Elton John surprised the crowd by inviting several guest performers on stage during his set. The London Community Gospel Choir and Jacob Lusk of the soul-pop group Gabriels kicked off the surprises. Stephen Sanchez, a 20-year-old American artist, joined John in singing one of his own songs. Later, Brandon Flowers of The Killers joined John for a rendition of Tiny Dancer, followed by Rina Sawayama’s collaboration on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. The concert reached its climax with a breathtaking rendition of Rocket Man, accompanied by a dazzling fireworks display.
Expressing his deep appreciation, Elton John thanked his fans for their “52 years of amazing love and loyalty.” He acknowledged the incredible journey he had experienced and assured the crowd that they would forever hold a special place in his heart, soul, and mind.
Elton John’s performance marked the culmination of days of outstanding acts at Glastonbury, where over 200,000 fans witnessed performances by renowned artists such as Guns N’Roses and the Foo Fighters. Guns N’Roses, making their debut at the festival, captivated the audience with a powerful two-hour-plus set, featuring classic hits like Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door, Sweet Child O’ Mine, and November Rain. The Foo Fighters’ frontman, Dave Grohl, who had played a surprise set on Friday, joined Guns N’Roses onstage for a special rendition of Paradise City.
Other acts playing this year included UK indie giants Arctic Monkeys, singer Lizzo, rapper Lil Nas X, post-punk icon Blondie and “rickroller” Rick Astley, highlighting Glastonbury’s eclectic ethos.
On Saturday a supportive crowd sang along as Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi, who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome, struggled to finish his set.
He announced he would take a break, after previously cancelling gigs to recuperate over health concerns.
