On Wednesday, Roger Federer shared his admiration for Novak Djokovic’s record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title achievement, describing it as “unbelievable.” However, the tennis legend refrained from declaring Djokovic as the greatest player of all time.
Federer, who retired last year with 20 Grand Slam titles to his name, acknowledged Djokovic’s remarkable feat in surpassing Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 major wins by claiming his third French Open title in Paris earlier this month.
Speaking at the Halle grass-court tournament, the 41-year-old Federer admitted that determining the best player of all time is a challenging task. He shared an anecdote, saying, “I asked a friend, what is more difficult, winning Wimbledon at 17, like Boris Becker, or the French Open at 36 like Novak? I don’t know.”
Federer emphasized that it is an exciting era for both tennis fans and players, appreciating the current state of the sport. As the guest of honour for ‘Roger Federer Day’ in Halle, where he holds the record for winning 10 singles titles, he expressed his joy in returning to the tournament, referring to it as a home away from home.
During his time at Halle, Federer spent over an hour signing autographs and taking selfies on the centre court, enjoying the sunny atmosphere. While he acknowledged the desire to experience the thrill of competition again, he stated that he doesn’t feel the need to be back on the court as long as he knows his body isn’t capable of performing at the highest level.
Federer’s remarks reflect his appreciation for Djokovic’s accomplishments while recognizing the ongoing debate surrounding the title of the greatest player of all time.
