PROTEAS WOMEN TO HOST NEW ZEALAND IN ODI AND T20 SERIES

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Wednesday that the New Zealand women’s cricket team will tour South Africa later this year for a limited-overs series against the Proteas Women. The series will consist of three ODIs and five T20Is, played across five cities from 24 September to 15 October.

The ODI series is of particular significance as it is part of the qualification process for the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25, leading up to the next 50-over World Cup.

The three ODI matches will take place in Potchefstroom on 24 September, Pietermaritzburg on 28 September, and Durban on 1 October.

The final ODI at Kingsmead in Durban will hold additional significance as a Black Day match, symbolizing the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting gender equality. Both teams will wear black armbands and don their respective black kits as a symbol of solidarity and support for the cause.

The T20I series will be played at Buffalo Park in East London and Willowmoore Park in Benoni from 6 to 15 October. This series will serve as preparation for the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in Bangladesh a year later.

Prior to the series, a warm-up match between South Africa XI and New Zealand XI will take place on 21 September at Willowmoore Park in Benoni.

CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki expressed excitement about the upcoming tour, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome New Zealand for this highly anticipated tour, and we extend our warmest wishes to both teams. We eagerly look forward to witnessing some exhilarating cricket and wish them the best of luck.”

Moseki highlighted the importance of the ODI series, particularly the Black Day match, in the ICC Women’s Championship qualification process. He expressed confidence in the Proteas Women’s abilities and commitment to the game, expecting them to make the nation proud with their performances on home soil.

In previous encounters, New Zealand has had the upper hand, winning 11 out of 17 ODIs against South Africa. The Proteas Women have secured only three victories out of 13 T20Is. However, during a white-ball tour of New Zealand in 2020, South Africa achieved success, winning the ODI series 3-0 but losing the T20I series 3-1.
