Radio and TV personality Robert Marawa has filed papers with the South Gauteng High Court seeking full parental rights and access to his young son in an application related to his former girlfriend and the mother of his child, Zoe Mthiyane. The court documents reveal a love story that began in 2009 or 2010 but ended in shattered dreams for Marawa and Mthiyane.
According to Marawa’s account, he and Mthiyane were romantically involved for about two years, during which they spent most of their time together at their residences in Fourways and Broadacres in Johannesburg. In 2010, Mthiyane became pregnant and expressed her desire to stop working. Marawa took responsibility for her and their unborn child, providing groceries, accompanying her to medical appointments at Fourways Life Hospital, and paying for all the pregnancy-related medical expenses.
As Mthiyane reached the final stages of her pregnancy, she moved to Richard’s Bay in KwaZulu-Natal to stay with her mother. Unfortunately, her mother passed away a month later, prompting Marawa to travel from Johannesburg to Richard’s Bay to offer his support and attend the funeral. Despite the physical distance between them during this period, Marawa states that they remained together.
Their child was born on July 18, 2011, in Richard’s Bay, and Marawa was present at the birth. He expresses his desire for the child to maintain his surname and states his opposition to any application by Mthiyane to change it.
Marawa explains that their relationship took a turn for the worse a year after their son’s birth. He decided to end the relationship and paid R20,000 in damages, following customary law. However, the situation deteriorated further towards the end of 2013 when Mthiyane informed Marawa of her intention to move to Australia. She had secured a two-year contract to appear in The Lion King musical. Unbeknownst to Marawa at the time, the father of Mthiyane’s second child was Lion King producer Lebo M.
Since then, Marawa claims that Mthiyane has denied him access to their child, leading him to seek full parental rights and visitation rights through the legal proceedings. Instead, she had dragged him to court, where she was demanding R29 000 a month in maintenance for their child.
Marawa is expected to ask the court on Friday to assess the best interests of their young son, with specific reference to care, contact and guardianship of the child and to make a recommendation in this regard.
