Banyana Banyana members return home from FIFA Women’s World Cup

Some members of the South African women’s national football team have finally made their long trip back home from Australia following their successful World Cup campaign.

Of course the ladies landed to a heroine’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport.

Hildah Magaia, Noko Matlou and Thembi Kgatlana were amongst the first Banyana group to arrive this week. Magaia said that each and every one of them is proud.

The Banyana attacker added by saying: “We went there with the mandate of qualifying for the Round of 16 and we did that. So it is a proud moment for all of us. We picked up injuries (in the game against the Netherlands) and it really killed our morale in the game. These things happen in football,”

Magaia was one of Desiree Ellis’ top players at the tournament getting in some of the most crucial goals for the team.

The team defeated Italy 3-2 to secure a passage to the round of 16 but were unfortunately dealt a heavy blow in the match against the Netherland when Jermaine Seoposenwe got a knock and was forced to leave the field.

The Netherlands eventually won 2-0 and Matlou said they were unlucky in that game.

The Banyana defender said: “It is not by mistake that we won WAFCON last year. “We went to the World Cup and we wanted to give our best, and we did our best. We went to the knockout stages and were unlucky to lose to the Netherlands in the Round of 16,”

The team next play USA next month.
