Bogus doctor arrested

Dr Matthew Lani is back, this time he is being held in custody by police.

The story started when Lani, who identifies as a medical doctor, became popular on TikTok for giving medical advice. Recently, a few of his followers started asking question surrounding his qualification.

Lani had claimed to be a registered healthcare professional with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and that he obtained a high school diploma from Cambridge International College but both institutions have denied any affiliation with him.

Lani was then subjected to the court of public opinion with users torn between what was true and what we were being told was the truth according to Lani. His TikTok account was banned but he managed to create a new one in an effort to uphold his innocence.

Just last night at around 8pm, Lani snuck into the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg in a hoodie wearing a surgical mask with a stethoscope around his neck.

The Gauteng Department of Health said security personnel at Helen Joseph Hospital stopped Lani on Sunday night after he accessed the premises through the main entrance.

Gauteng health department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said Lani had previously entered the same facility to curate misleading content under the pretense that he was a qualified doctor.

Once Lani was apprehended by security at the hospital, he asked to use the bathroom and tried to escape through the bathroom window.

“When the security realized that he was making a run for it, they called for reinforcements, and he was subsequently apprehended again. The police were immediately called. Lani has since been handed over to the police for an official arrest,” Modibe said.
