Most Wanted: Kelly Khumalo allegedly ordered the hit on Senzo Meyiwa

It looks like Kelly Khumalo almost got away with murder. And a warrant of arrest has been issued for her.

In a shocking turn of events at the Pretoria high court, two individuals accused of the murder of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa have implicated his then-girlfriend and mother of his child, Kelly Khumalo, as the mastermind behind the assassination.

Lead investigator Brig Bongani Gininda, while presenting his second statement in court, disclosed that Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, two of the accused, claimed that Khumalo had given instructions for the killing of Meyiwa.

The accused, including Sibiya, Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, are currently on trial for Meyiwa’s murder and have pleaded not guilty.

Meyiwa was fatally shot in Khumalo’s presence at her mother’s home in Vosloorus in October 2014, with witnesses including Kelly’s sister Zandile, her boyfriend Longwe Twala, her mother Ntombi Khumalo, and two friends of Meyiwa present at the time.

Gininda’s statement highlighted that Khumalo failed to disclose four cellphone numbers to the police, and further investigations revealed her connection to Mncube and Ntuli through cellphone records. The statement also pointed to Khumalo’s alleged involvement with a witch doctor for cleansing, a practice also undertaken by the accused after Meyiwa’s death.

According to Gininda, Sibiya, initially linked through witness statements and admissions to individuals in KZN, later confessed to an independent officer, implicating Khumalo as the person who ordered the hit on Meyiwa. Ntanzi, identified as the second intruder, also allegedly implicated Khumalo in the murder.

The investigation revealed that Mncube, already serving a 35-year sentence for a murder in 2015, was identified as the trigger puller, with ballistic tests confirming the firearm used in Meyiwa’s murder matched the one used in Mncube’s previous crime.

Maphisa, linked through a confession to a private person, was revealed to have threatened Ntanzi not to implicate him. Ntuli, identified as the getaway driver, was connected to Khumalo through cellphone calls.

Gininda concluded by stating that the accused are known as hitmen involved in taxi wars. The revelations in court have thrust Khumalo into a central role as the alleged orchestrator of Meyiwa’s murder, adding a new layer of complexity to the ongoing trial.
