Time Out’s latest rankings for 2024 place Cape Town not only as the best city in South Africa but also as the second-best city globally. The rankings are determined through an annual survey where residents provide insights into their city’s living, working, and recreational aspects.
New York, known as ‘The City That Never Sleeps,’ claimed the top spot globally due to its vibrant nightlife, art exhibitions, musical theatre scene, and constant innovation. Cape Town secured the second position, surpassing cities such as Berlin, London, and Madrid.
Cape Town’s high scores were came from its stunning natural beauty, including landmarks like Table Mountain and its numerous beaches. According to the survey, 100% of locals expressed that the city is beautiful and brings them happiness.
The city’s multiculturalism was highlighted, with institutions like the District Six Museum and Robben Island showcasing the challenging history of apartheid. The vibrant Bo-Kaap, known for its colorful homes, was emphasized as a must-visit to experience the Cape Malay community, and tourists are increasingly contributing to township economies.
Cape Town’s rich art scene, featuring a lot of studios, galleries, and public events, was also celebrated. To top it all off, the city was recognized as the most LGBTQ+ friendly city on the African continent. Overall, Cape Town’s cultural scene basically earned the title of the best in the world for its exceptional quality.
