Sta-Sof-Fro powers Women Leading Music Culture at Africa Rising Music Conference 2024

In recent years, we have witnessed a remarkable surge in the prominence of women who DJ, both locally and on a global scale. Reflecting not just musical prowess but also a shift in cultural perception and representation, this growth has coincided with a notable transformation in the image of DJing.

It has been fascinating to see the image of women who DJ transform from challenging traditional norms to embracing a diverse range of styles and identities. This evolution in DJing for women has extended to event organising and curating, representing a new facet of the ongoing battle against the marginalization that women who DJ face.

While there has been an emergence of female-led sonic experiences like BeatsByHer, Que Sera Sera, Kat Upendi’s Gbedu Nights, and RememberShe by Lee Da Cocktail, it prompts us to question the absence of brands that claim that they support and empower female-driven platforms and movements. This concern has led creative director, event curator, and ARMC ambassador, Tsholo Rabotsho, to spearhead a panel discussion titled Women Leading Music Culture at the forthcoming 2024 Africa Rising Music Conference, to dissect where brands and women who DJ can meet to continue the plight to levelling the playing field.
