Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe returns to the big screen this Winter in a The Exorcism, a supernatural horror film, set to have audiences on the edge of their seats, when it releases in cinemas nationwide on Friday 2 August.
Ryan Simpkins plays 16-year-old Lee, Crowe’s daughter in the film. The Exorcism is a reunion of sorts for the two actors. Crowe recalls, “I’ve known Ryan for quite a long time and worked with her younger brother, Ty, in 2010’s The Next Three Days. He played my son. And oddly enough, there was a moment when Ty was working in Australia, and he was with his family, so he came and visited me, where I live on a farm. His mom and Ryan were with him. And it just so happened to be that was Ryan’s 18th birthday. So we put on a big birthday party for her. So, you know, this is many years later and this idea of working together came up with the idea of her being suggested for the role. So, I was very enthusiastic about that.”
Additional cast members include Sam Worthington (“Avatar: The Way of Water”), Chloe Bailey (“Praise This”), Adam Goldberg (“The Equalizer”), David Hyde Pierce (“Frasier”), Adrian Pasdar (“Near Dark”), Tracey Bonner (“The Beanie Bubble”) and Josh Warren (“Footloose”).
Shot as a movie within a movie, the film stars Crowe as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who is trying to resuscitate his career when he lands the lead role of a priest in a supernatural horror film about an exorcism. As unsettling events unfold, his “lucky break” takes a dark turn. The director (Adam Goldberg), aiming for authenticity, subjects the struggling actor to humiliating treatment, forcing him to confront past traumas and accelerating his decline.
Witnessing his suffering, Anthony’s estranged daughter (Ryan Simpkins) turns to the film’s priest advisor (David Hyde Pierce) for help. Has the pressure of making the film sent Anthony back to his old addictions, or has it opened a portal to something more sinister?

While there has been widespread speculation that “The Exorcism” is a follow up to “The Pope’s Exorcist”, this is not the case. While both movies star Academy Award ® winning actor, Russell Crowe, “The Exorcism” is a completely different and brand-new horror film. The film is inspired by the rumoured mysteries that took place on the set of the original 1973 cult classic, The Exorcist.
What’s even spookier is that the film is directed by Joshua John Miller, the son of the actor, Jaso Miller, who played Father Damien Karras in the original Exorcist film. The film from the stable of Kevin Williamson – producer of “Halloween” and the creator or the “Scream” franchise, is releasing exclusively in cinemas on 2 August.
