Controversial social media entertainment commentator Musa Khawula found himself in hot water once again. Khawula was arrested at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape on Tuesday, 9 July, amidst his ongoing murder trial.
The outspoken blogger’s dramatic arrest happened just as he appeared for his ongoing trial concerning the alleged murder of his ex-boyfriend, Wandile Khambule, whom he is accused of stabbing to death in March 2022 in Vredenburg. According to Sunday World, the arrest was initiated when a court sheriff arrived after Khawula’s court appearance, informing the magistrate of an outstanding warrant for his arrest pertaining to a civil case in Gauteng.
Eric Ntabazalila, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape, confirmed Khawula’s arrest. He noted that Khawula’s murder case has been remanded to 7 August 2024 for judicial review.
The civil case against Khawula stems from allegations he made against Nozuko Mbalula, the wife of ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, and her business partner, Michelle Perrow. In a series of posts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) dated 8 May, Khawula accused Nozuko and Perrow of being involved in a R150 million fraud and corruption scandal related to dubious government tenders.
On 28 May, Judge Nicolene Janse van Nieuwenhuizen ruled that Khawula’s publication of these allegations was unlawful. The judge ordered the social media influencer to retract his statements within 48 hours by deleting the entire thread from social media. Additionally, Khawula was interdicted from conducting any interviews or posting statements on X or any other social media platforms implying that Nozuko and Perrow were involved in fraud and corruption.
As a consequence of the ruling, Khawula was also held liable to pay R1 million in damages to both Nozuko Mbalula and Michelle Perrow. This latest legal trouble only adds to the turbulent saga surrounding Khawula, whose provocative commentary has frequently landed him in the headlines.
As the saga continues, all eyes remain on Musa Khawula, waiting to see how the outspoken commentator will navigate these murky waters. Whether it’s his murder trial or the hefty civil case damages, Khawula’s journey through the legal system promises to be as dramatic and unpredictable as his online persona.
