Sudan puts the Skids on Ghana in Afcon Clash Draw

Round 3 of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games has left the four-times African Champion Ghana, in a predicament after a 0-0 draw at home to Sudan last night (10 October 2024). The draw leaves Ghana third in the Group F standings, four points behind Angola and two behind Sudan.

Angola will be hosting Niger in Luanda on Friday and a home victory would see them a full seven points clear of Ghana at the qualifying round’s halfway mark.

With only the top two teams progressing into the knockout phase, it now seems unlikely that Ghana will even get through. Should Sudan beat Ghana in Benghazi on Tuesday the Black Stars will be out of the contest.

Ghana have been on a gradual decline in form since reaching the 2017 Cup of Nations semi-finals, losing in the round of 16 two years later and then twice being eliminated at the group stage.

The Black Star squad includes several players from the top five European leagues, and the team is placed 50-places above Sudan according to the current world ranking, may not even reach the finals, a humiliation last suffered 21 years ago. Ghana have also failed to score at home for the second straight AFCON qualifier
