Asem Takes the Crown: Klein Paradys’ First Champions Breathe Easy

The name of their unit, Asem (which means “breath” in Afrikaans), couldn’t have been more fitting. After a nail-biting final scoring round, Lee-Ann and Johann could finally exhale as they were crowned the winners of the very first season of Klein Paradys.

The competition came down to the finest of margins—just 0.1 points separated Asem from the second-place finisher, making this victory one for the history books. Their efforts secured them a whopping R1 million, courtesy of Capitec, while runners-up Juan-Louis and Elri walked away with an impressive collection of vouchers from various sponsors.

From the start, it was clear that Lee-Ann and Johann were a force to be reckoned with. Though not siblings, their connection was undeniable—Lee-Ann is married to Johann’s brother, but their teamwork was as seamless as if they’d been designing together for years. With Lee-Ann currently studying interior design in Pretoria and Johann working as a structural engineer in Durbanville, their combined skill sets made them a formidable duo.

“The process was incredibly rewarding, and I think all of us grew and learned a lot this month. I’m really proud of us,” Lee-Ann reflected after the winners were announced.

With just under a month to complete their units, the six competing teams poured heart and soul into their designs. The final rankings were determined through a combination of expert evaluations, peer scoring among the contestants, and the verdict of the three main judges: Wicus Pretorius, Magdalene Bobotoni, and Jessica Pieters.

A panel of industry experts, including micro-unit designers, an architect, and Capitec’s head of marketing, ranked the top three units as follows:

  • Aardvark (Yvette & Klaas) – Third Place
  • Intak (Juan-Louis & Elri) – Second Place
  • Asem (Lee-Ann & Johann) – First Place

When the contestants’ votes were factored in, the leaderboard saw a surprising shift: Asem and Intak tied for second, while 22 (Jannie & Mika) and Palimpses (Gerrie & Maggie) tied for first. But ultimately, it was the main judges who had the final say.
