A recent post by British Nigerian rapper Skepta on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked conversation about the way Apple Music organises content.
Popularly known as Big Smoke, Skepta shared on his timeline: “We all wanna do alphabetical order until it’s time to put Africa at the top lol. I don’t even listen to Taylor Swift.”
The artist’s comment seems to point out how music from Africa, despite its immense global influence, is often overlooked in mainstream platforms.

The statement about placing “Africa at the top” appears to critic how music from the continent is sometimes relegated to lower priority in global rankings and playlists, even with genres like Afrobeats gaining widespread popularity.
His last line, “I don’t even listen to Taylor Swift,” is believed to emphasise Skepta’s independence from mainstream pop culture, with various reactions being sparked among fans.
Praise was given by some of his followers for highlighting the lack of African representation, while others debated whether the remark was a necessary critic or just a swipe at popular Western artists.
A comment in response to Skepta’s post read: “This is mine… I don’t do listen to ‘fitness’ or classical music, I don’t do karaoke, I don’t listen to Christmas music and I’ve never used Spatial Audio a day in my life. First two and Chill are the only ones which I see to be correct.”
On the other hand, a more critical response was given by another user:
“This one is trying to pander to afrobeats. If you listen to afrobeat, it’ll be at the top. I’m sure you can’t name 10 afrobeat songs without using the internet. smh.”
