The Dibakwane family has publicly shared their devastation in a statement, revealing that they are still grappling with the loss.
“The past few days have been excruciating for us as we battle to deal with this loss,” the statement reads. Preliminary reports suggest that Dibakwane died by suicide, though the final cause of death will be confirmed after a post-mortem examination.
“Poignantly, Ebby was well-known for the talent of making people laugh, and yet he struggled with depression for a number of years,” they said.
Ebenhaezer’s content has also become a point of reflection for many online. Fans and fellow comedians have noted that the signs of his internal struggles were often visible in his work.
His jokes, though humorous on the surface, sometimes contained subtle hints of the pain and loneliness he might have been feeling. Some have pointed out that his content often touched on themes of mental health, personal pain, and self-doubt, suggesting that these were issues he was grappling with long before his death.

The internet has now recognised these moments as potential cries for help, a reminder of how difficult it can be for individuals to express their struggles openly.
The family expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming love and support from fans and the comedy community during this incredibly difficult time. They also urged anyone who is struggling with depression or thoughts of suicide to seek help, directing them to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) for support.
