SA unrest: Parliamentary inquiry hits a snag

Parliament’s planned inquiry into the recent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng has hit a snag.

It’s emerged the committees tasked with the job don’t have the legal prescripts to proceed.

The security cluster committees of both the houses of Parliament were due to be briefed by ministers on Friday and come up with terms of reference for the inquiry.

Last week, House Chairperson Cedric Frolick instructed the committees to initiate a joint probe and report back to the National Assembly within two weeks.

But Parliament’s legal team pointed out according to house rules, the said committees can’t legally initiate a probe without a resolution from both houses.

It’s been recommended while Parliament is still in recess, the Speaker consider the establishment of an ad hoc committee, instead.
