Biography

Thembi Majola (born in Soweto) is a renowned South African politician. She currently serves as the permanent Director-General of the State Security Agency (SSA). Before this appointment by the presidency, Ms. Thembi had also occupied several notable positions.

On 24 May 2014, she resumed work as the Deputy Minister of Energy. She left office on 31 December 2018 after resigning. She was also South Africa’s ambassador to Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea Bissau.

Early Life

Thembi Majola was born in Soweto, a township of the City of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. She has also contributed to the growth of the South African political structure. 

Qualifications

Thembi had her basic education in Botswana, Cuba, and Zambia. She enrolled for a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in Camaguey, Cuba. She also holds a Masters’s Degree in the same field (Civil Engineering).

Career

She has been active in politics since the 90s. Thembi worked as a Project and Site Engineer. During this time, she handled several projects.

She held the position of the Executive Secretary of the Women and Development Programme, World Council of Churches, Geneva, Switzerland (1993-1997).

Thembi also worked as a Consultant at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) in 1997. She was also the Chief Director of International Relations and Trade, Office of the Deputy President.

She also worked as Deputy Director-General, Presidential Support Unit in The Presidency (2001-2005). In 2006, Thembi Majola served as the Ambassador of South Africa to Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Verde, Gambia, and Guinea Bissau. 

She then held the position of Deputy Coordinator of Core Business, National Intelligence Coordinating Committee in 2009.

She also served as the Consultant in the Office of the Premier, Gauteng in 2010. Thembi also worked as Market Development Manager for Africa, Aurecon (2010-2013).

Political Participation

She is a member of the ruling party of the Republic of South Africa African National Congress (ANC). Her membership dates back to the 80s. She has been an active member of the party throughout her youth.

Thembi continued to be an active member of the party ANC and has held notable positions.

She served at the ANC Women’s Section Conference, Luanda, Angola (Angolan region delegate) in 1987. Later, she became the Secretary, ANC Women’s Section, Angola (1987-1989).

Appointment

The president of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Thembi Majola to serve as a permanent Director-General of the State Security Agency (SSA). 

Thembisile Majola’s appointment is effective from 1 March 2022. According to President Ramaphosa, “the appointment of… Thembi Majola to this position is an important part of our work to stabilize the country’s intelligence services.

“Her extensive experience in government, international relations and security makes her well placed to lead the reform and rebuilding of the State Security Agency.”
