Mastermind and Hitmen Behind DJ Sumbody’s Death Arrested

In a major development nearly three years after the shocking assassination of South African music sensation DJ Sumbody, four men have been arrested in connection with his murder.

DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, was gunned down in November 2022 in a targeted shooting that also claimed the lives of his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. The brutal killing left fans and the music industry in mourning, with many demanding answers and justice.

The latest breakthrough comes after relentless efforts by Gauteng’s Organised Crime Detectives, who later enlisted the support of the SAPS Political Killings Task Team. On Monday, July 21, the task team arrested four suspects aged between 45 and 60 in Gauteng.

According to police, three of the suspects are believed to be professional hitmen, while the fourth is suspected to be the mastermind who ordered the hit. A firearm believed to have been used in the murder was also recovered and has since been linked to other killings, further deepening the investigation.

The suspects are facing charges including three counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They are expected to make their first court appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 22.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola hailed the arrest as a significant victory in the pursuit of justice: “This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. Our teams took the time necessary to ensure a thorough investigation and to ultimately bring a strong case before the court.”
