Mamelodi Sundowns dedicated their sixth DStv Premiership title to their late communications manager Alex Shakoane.
Shakoane also known as ‘Mr. Goldfingers’, was laid to rest on Tuesday morning and the club went on to lift this season’s league trophy on the same night.
Despite failing to win their final match of the 2022/23 season, Masandawana managed a draw against Maritzburg United but lifted the trophy and scooped R15 million in prize money.
After the match, coach Rulani Mokwena took a jibe at his former club, Orlando Pirates, implying that winning the league cannot be compared to MTN8 and Nedbank glory.
“This is the most important trophy in the country, it is the championship,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV.

“It is a tournament that runs for 10 months and goes home and away against every opponent and you have to be at your best consistently to win it.
“You can fluke one or two wins, or three or maybe four, and then a cup is delivered, but you have to be extremely consistent to win the championship against 15 opponents and this magnificent football club keeps doing it over and over again.”

“Champions of the land ONCE MORE are Mamelodi Sundowns FC, huge congratulations to the boys, technical team, and supporters. Roll on the next season.”
Heading to the weekend, Sundowns will face off against reigning African champions Wydad Casablanca at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Having played to a goalless draw away from home last weekend, Mokwena and his troops will look to secure a win and reach the final of the CAF Champions League.
